Peace, Power and the Way of the Cross

The last of our four Good Friday reflections came from J.D. Allen. His words were preceded by comments and music from Rev. Eric Folkerth of Northaven United Methodist, "This is My Song".

This is my song, O God of all the nations,
A song of peace for lands afar and mine.

Listen to the song and hear all of the reflections from the last Good Friday at:

Our country is at a crossroads in Afghanistan Iraq. We continue to reflect on...

Peace, Power and the Way of the Cross

We stand now to the West knowing that the West today symbolizes power, domination, and oppression. We have gathered here to reflect and repent today of our participation in the power of the West over the rest of the world.

We stand here to proclaim, "Jesus is Lord!" By proclaiming, "Jesus is Lord!" we conversely proclaim that Caesar is not. The American presidency is not. Congress and the Pentagon are not. Al-Quaida is not. Nor is any national leader who may claim supremacy.

I am reminded of John Dominic Crossan's words in his book God and Empire in which he explains that we should stop calling ourselves American Christians and call ourselves Christian Americans for it is in Christ in which we first and foremost find our identity.

The problem with the church today and over the centuries is that it has forgotten that lordship is defined and exhibited much differently in Jesus. The church of Jesus has chosen to live as the nations of the world. Lordship is not found in domination, violence, and defeat of our enemies. It is found in vulnerability, nonviolence, and reconciliation with our enemies.

So today we have followed the cross. The cross in which Christ took up speaking truth to power while establishing a new kind of kingdom on earth. And we follow today seeking to take up our own cross and proclaim to the world that "Jesus is Lord!" and there is another way.
